Not going chime in to say how great the book is. Word of warning though: I did spend a few days just on the introduction, assuming I will not be able to follow the book if it dealt with the concepts with the same level of abstractness throughout. But fear not, the Prelude could be termed as 'Summary' or 'What am I trying to analyze'. You can come back to it any time later when you feel comfortable. The book itself lends to fast reading, unless you stop to work out the logic exercises. One of those books, which massages your mind in such a way that 'it will not regain its original shape'.
Heavens! Hofstadter created a deep rabbit hole full of delicious reasoning "just" to make Gödel's proof palatable. The result is impossibly yummy because he connected together three genius Gödel (logician), Escher (artist) and Bach (composer). Armed with wit and ingenuity, he goes about showing off isomorphisms among mathematics, art and music. He even teases you with Lewis Carroll type of dialogs. Suddenly you are chewing very complex ideas but having lots of fun. The main goal is of course understand how the smart-stupids (computers) could outperform the human brain. In the end, he jumps in his own damn book bringing Babbage and Turing to close the whole thing brilliantly. While(true){WOW!}.
Das Buch halte ich für sehr gut - aus mehreren Gründen: Zum einen das Thema, daß man Werke eines Mathematikers,Musikers und Malers miteinander vergleicht und zu sehr interessanten Schlußfolgerungen kommt. So ein Buch mit diesem Inhalt hat es so noch nicht gegeben. Allerdings ist dieses Buch nicht für jedermann ohne die entsprechenden Vorkenntnisse verständlich. Douglas Hofstadter gelingt es in vorbildlicher Weise dieses an sich sehr harte Thema für einen großen Personenkreis lesbar zu machen.
This should be a textbook at the Universities, seriously, it's an amazing book that will blow your mind! It's amazing how human brain actually handled music, painting and maths in parallel patterns. Just read it, really. It's a must read for everyone curious about the parallels between different fields such as maths, music and painting.
When i first read this book 12 years ago it opened my eyes for the beauty of mathematics and music and their connection, i highly recommend this to anyone with an interest in mathematics.
